What a delight this film is, a caustic satire of untouchable authority and the manner in which our socially ingrained sense of certain people can lead us away from obvious culprits who do not "fit the profile." Bitterly funny and thrillingly assembled, Petri's film is so entertaining it's a wonder it seemed to drop out of cinephile consciousness these last few decades. But no fear, Criterion reintroduces it with verve, with a beautiful 4K restoration and a host of extras that could have filled out an entire box set. The features make the case not only for the film, but Petri in general as unfairly overlooked, and watching them along with the movie, it's hard not to rush out and try to find anything he ever did. This is Criterion at its best.
